About
Emerald is a PhD Candidate at the School of Asian Languages and Studies at the University of Tasmania (located conveniently on an island at the bottom of the world). Her PhD project investigates the use of violent and masochistic imagery in the work of modern Japanese women writers (1970s to present day).
Emerald started her undergraduate degree in Japanese and English Literature at the University of Tasmania in 2001. In 2003-2004 she studied at Kinjo Gakuin University on an AIEJ UMAP scholarship through the University's exchange partners program. In 2005 she completed her honours in Japanese Literature on the work of author Kurahashi Yumiko. Emerald's current research interests include: violence in text, masochistic theory, fashion, anime and manga, cats, food, witches and vampires.
Recently Emerald completed a Japan Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship to conduct research into her doctoral topic at Ochanomizu University (Tokyo, Japan) for 11 months.
